On my baby’s first birthday
Dear Baby
I love you so very much. Every day your cheery smile lights up my world. People tell me you’re the happiest, smiliest baby they’ve ever seen.
After meeting your big brother, I never expected to have a blonde-haired, blue-eyed baby, but here you are.

You’re so inquisitive, sometimes sitting quietly engrossed in investigating the smallest details of your latest find, and sometimes flinging open cupboards and pulling everything out in search of… who knows what? You’ve developed a bit of a thing for climbing – at the moment, your legs are very small and many things are out of your reach, but I think next year will be a different story. You’re so close to walking, too. I don’t think it’ll be long at all before you’re toddling around all by yourself.
Just lately you’re learning so much: you draw with crayons (when you’re not trying to eat them or fling them on the floor), paint with a watery brush and build little towers. You eat enthusiastically; your favourites are grapes and quesadillas. One of your absolute favourite pastimes is putting things inside other things: shapes in a shape sorter, or toys in boxes, or sometimes important lipglosses and remote controls in secret, hidden places. It doesn’t take you long to get used to new places and you crawl around at speed, happy to meet new people and offer kisses to those you know and love.
You’re such a wonderful little brother: loving, playful and patiently accepting of overzealous cuddles and accidental (or deliberate) bumps and squashes. Sometimes this year has been hard work, but I see you and your brother together and I love you both so much and know that I’m so lucky and could never want for anything more.
I’m so very proud of you and so excited for your future and all the things still to come.
Thank you, my darling baby, for a wonderful year.

Aaaw happy birthday to your beautiful little man! He is absolutely gorgeous!
This is a beautiful post, he really sounds like an amazing little fellow to be with.
Thank you, he really is a dream baby. Except at night time, I’d like it if he slept more soundly!
Aw how sweet! He’s a smasher. Lovely words too.
He is indeed a smasher, although it was mostly smashing stuff up on a path of destruction this afternoon!
Aw he’s gorgeous, love his smile!
Happy 1st Birthday little one x
Happy birthday baby boy! And happy ‘birth’ day to you Kirsty. I hope you have both had a wonderful day! L.x
Thank you – it is quite a big day for me too, I think. A year as a mother of two – I deserve a celebration!
Lovely post, and a special memory that he will treasure when he’s older I’m sure. And Happy Birthday little man!
Thank you. I do hope the blog will be nice for the kids to look back on when they’re older – I’m terrible at keeping diaries, but blogging it is a good motivation to record the big milestones (and, probably more importantly, the little things that don’t seem to matter at the time!).
What a lovely post, he will hide with embarrassment in 15 years when he reads it, but his heart will burst with knowing how much you love him
Lovely! Your words have summed up the excitement, wonder and fun of parenting perfectly. Aaah : )
